Would Keto Work For You?

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

My goal is to make this the last post you ever have to read when deciding if you want to give Keto a try.

Keto can work really well for a lot of people.

The biggest thing I want you to take away from this, though, is that it works for weight loss ONLY if you are in a caloric deficit.

Meaning you are consuming fewer calories than you burn.

If you are NOT burning more calories than you consume on a consistent basis, you won’t lose weight.

Not on Keto. Not on Paleo. Not on eating clean. Not on a vegan diet. Not on a carnivore diet. Not on anything.

Your body burns a certain amount of calories each day. This is different for everyone, and finding it can take a little experimentation, but once you have that number, and you eat under it pretty consistently, you’ll see the weight go down.

But you will NOT lose weight by simply eliminating certain food groups if you are not in a calorie deficit.

The reason Keto works for many people without them paying any attention to calories is because they went into a calorie deficit by default when they “went Keto.”

Cutting out sweets, sodas, chips, and the like will often do that.

But you can be 100% in accordance with the keto diet and not lose weight, and can even gain it, if you gravitate toward higher calorie keto-approved foods.

And if you don’t believe me, go eat steak, cheese, nuts, bacon, and butter to your heart’s content, and watch the number on your scale move on up.

I by no means want to disparage people who have had success with Keto.

There are people in the Keto community who understand and preach what I’m saying here, and those are the ones whose posts I’ll share and whose voices I’ll support.

But if you see someone telling you that calories don’t matter, then what you’ve got there is someone who is ignoring decades of scientific research and even more experiential data from people all the way from the elite athlete level to us average Joes and Janes.

They may be choosing to ignore this, or they may be simply

regurgitating what they’ve heard elsewhere with no unbiased research of their own.

And, now that you understand this about calories, if you see someone selling a tea, pill, juice, or shake that they claim will make you lose weight “with nothing else required,” you’ll know that this person is either:

-Probably well intentioned but is misled about what actually causes their success.

Or

-They’re lying and trying to exploit you and probably (hopefully) doing some ethical gymnastics to convince themselves that what they’re doing isn’t wrong.

Please, understand this. Keto works. If you’re in a caloric deficit. So try it if you want!

But there is no magic about it.

Calories matter more than anything, ANYTHING else for weight loss. Focus on consistency there, and you’ll see success.

And if you want help, comment or message me. I love helping with this stuff.
