Last year, I saw this meme, laughed, shared it, and received far more passionate comments and DMs than I expected.
I’ve written extensively before about my views on the Keto diet, so I’m not going to rehash all that here.
But to summarize, I don’t hate Keto, and I do believe Keto works.
The process of ketosis, whereby the body can burn more fat in the absence of carbohydrates, is a real thing if done correctly.
But eating low-carb, low-fat, low-Talenti, or anything else is ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS if you are not in a calorie deficit, meaning that there is an actual NEED for energy.
Being Keto, Paleo, Carnivore, Vegan, or anything else does not automatically mean you will lose weight.
It means you will lose weight if you are in a calorie deficit created by those strategies.
If you take nothing else from this, take this: If you are in a CONSISTENT calorie deficit (burning more calories than you consume), then you WILL lose weight, regardless of what macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat) you emphasize or restrict.
The reason I think the meme is funny is because a lot of keto proponents, often those trying to sell something, promote it with no explanations of how it works. And when I’ve engaged in the past, I’ve been met with either ignorance (in the literal sense of the word) of how it works, or with having my comments deleted.
Their ads and advice are often ignorant at best and manipulative at worst.
As a result, people wind up spending their hard-earned money on butter coffee and drinks with “ketones” in them and making absolutely zero progress.
Listen, I’m all in on fitness coaching. This is my chosen profession. Not because I’m forced into it or it’s just where I’ve landed.
I love it and am passionate about it, and I will forever and always stand firmly against anyone who wants to take advantage of or further confuse those working to better their health and fitness to make some extra Starbucks money or whatever.
I don’t care if they’re a Keto proponent, a bodybuilder, a powerlifter, a vegetarian, or my grandma.
Love you.
