I want to talk today about mindset during your workout/training sessions. First off, I want to say that if you are regularly working out, that’s so awesome!
Your mindset going into a workout, though, can drastically influence your results.
Let’s use two examples to illustrate this:
Nature Boy Ric Flair walks in ready to go. He’s taken some caffeine, fueled himself up with some carbs and protein, and selected a playlist that will melt even the Nature Boy’s face off. He goes into the gym determined to move up on weight on at least a few of his lifts today. He’s undistracted and focused, and he makes progress on his weight, therefore getting stronger and making progress toward increasing lean muscle mass.
Vince Mcmahon walks into the gym by habit, knowing he needs to be there, but not feeling it at all. Ratings for his biggest TV show are down, and he suspects it’s his fault. He hasn’t eaten enough today and didn’t have a chance to get amped up for his workout. He stays on his phone between every set and mindlessly drones through the same exercises with the same weights and reps that he accomplished last week on this workout. He remains stuck on his progress for as long as he keeps this up.
This post isn’t to say don’t be on your phone during workouts or to have 1k grams of caffeine every day. Some of those things are symptoms of having your mindset right to workout.
If you go in committed, absolutely determined to progress, and willing to push through any discomfort (not pain or injury, discomfort),then you will continue to get closer and closer to your goals. If you keep showing up but not giving it your all, you will likely stay about where you are. If you are okay with where you are, then that’s fine. But if you’re trying to progress and are wondering why you aren’t despite regularly working out, take a look at how intensely you go into it.
One caveat: we all have rough days where we just show up despite not feeling it. It’s admirable. The problem starts when that becomes the norm. So go into your workout as intense and determined as you possibly can!
