Mindset Monday 3/11/19

Here’s a question we’ve probably all asked: How do I get motivated to _____? That blank could be “workout,” “eat well,” “pursue fitness goals,” or just about anything else.

Well. This is the toughest question, isn’t it? It’s the only one I get fairly regularly and that I’m not sure I’ll ever have an answer for.

Motivation is so weird. And in its absence, all that’s really there is discipline and trying to find more motivation. Two thoughts:

1. Sometimes, if it’s short term, you have to just push through. I’m running on so little sleep right now with the new baby that I do NOT want to lift some nights. But I just up my caffeine, think about my goals, and do it anyway. Sometimes, I get into it after I start, and sometimes I just grind through miserably. But this is a season, and it’s rarely sustainable to just use white-knuckle discipline like this long term.

2. Find smaller motivations. Maybe you can’t be motivated to go all out right now on a large scale fitness plan. But maybe you can get excited about, say, one good workout session a week. Something is better than nothing. And we go through stages in life where motivation just isn’t there. Those are the times to take it a little easier on yourself, but to find smaller steps to focus on. Not to give up or put it on the back burner.

You’ve absolutely got this.
