Mindset Monday 2/25/19

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

A LOT of people are walking around discouraged and beaten down about taking charge of their fitness. They feel that they can’t ever stick to anything, simple as the plan may be. Their lack of willpower, time, money, or a combination thereof keeps them paralyzed and feeling hopeless.

Listen, there is no cookie cutter fix for everyone with this problem. When I get a client like this, we have to dig deep and figure out what is really preventing them from moving forward, then start with small steps.

But, there is something that can help everyone at least a little: shifting their mindset to not go it alone. You see, I almost guarantee you that there is at least one person in your life, even if they are only in your life online, who would love to come alongside you in this. Maybe it’s a workout partner, a coach, or a friend or family member willing to check in. Sometimes, all that a person needs to begin to make this fitness thing a part of their life is someone who brings it up regularly.

So, do this:

First, think about whether you have anyone who could actually hit the gym with you. Don’t hinder yourself by thinking that it has to be a six day a week thing, one is better than zero! Think of who could hit the gym with you once a week or more.

If you can’t identify anyone, consider hiring a coach. Online coaching is great, and I’d be happy to chat and see if we’d be a good fit to work together. If you want an in-person coach, don’t just go to your closest gym and request one. That’s like going shopping for a new t-shirt and just telling them to give you anything. It might not be the right size, you might hate it, it might have JarJar Binks or Johnny Gargano on it …be selective. Find a coach who’s personality you gel with and who seems to know their stuff. Ask them some questions, don’t just blindly accept their expertise because it may or may not exist.

If you don’t have someone who can workout with you and you can’t afford or don’t want a coach, think of someone in your life who can check in with you regularly. Maybe it’s someone you know personally, someone you’ve connected with on social media, etc.

It’s not always you against the world, no matter what life has led you to believe. We all have strengths and weaknesses, life priorities, etc, and we all need help. Those people who you think are better than you because they are in great shape fitness-wise are a wreck in some other area of their life that you just may have together. Some things are just more visible than others.

If this is you, please, reach out to someone. We are stronger together.
