Burn the Scale

What you weigh doesn’t matter.


I know you’ve heard that before and ignored it, likely because you don’t understand why it doesn’t matter, and because weight is the only real method that society has given you to measure your fitness progress.


Here’s why it doesn’t matter: weight is just a measurement of how gravity interacts with your body mass. When you step on a scale, it shows you a number based on this. You can’t see weight any more than you can see that gravity, so unless you’re an athlete who has to make a certain weight to compete, why give it a second thought?


A person can be 200 pounds and just be stepping off the stage after winning their bodybuilding competition, or they can be 200 pounds considered obese for their height. They can also be extremely healthy or extremely unhealthy at 135. Weight is not what matters here.


Listen, what you really care about is how you look and feel, right? Stop paying attention to what the scale says and start noticing how you look and feel. Measure your progress in belt loops, dress sizes, weight on the bar, time on the clock, your reflection, and compliments from people noticing a difference. If you are one of those people who really needs to track a number, get a measuring tape and measure yourself once a week.


Another benefit of this method is that it’s a measurement of progress that’s always with you. You don’t need to dread what the scale is going to say on Friday morning (which, by the way, could be influenced by a ton of variables), you just look at yourself and you just know how you feel. Which, again, is what you really care about anyway.

I don’t really expect you to burn your scale. It can be a legitimate measure of progress for someone trying to lose a lot of body fat, but it shouldn’t be the primary one.
