You Don’t Have To Wake Up Early To Be Successful

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

Early morning.

The birds chirping in that “just waking up” tone.

The first rays of sunlight coming through your window.

The silence of the world around you.

It’s all so beautiful.

And I’m totally okay with never being conscious during it again.

Google any list of tips about time management, and you’ll find included some form of “wake up early.” We’re told that this is what successful, productive people do.

Hold on, I might get a little ✨salty ✨.

In my opinion, this is the equivalent of sharing your pet diet plan with someone wanting to lose weight while having absolutely zero context of that person’s life. For all you know, they already naturally lean toward a very low-carb diet OR can’t fathom doing that, and if so, your precious Keto isn’t going to help them see much of a change.

This is why I always had my clients track their eating for a few weeks before I made any recommendations; doing anything else is like trying to hit a target when you don’t know where it is. Maybe you have a stroke of luck, but probably not.

Listen, I’ve tried getting up early. And before you think “you didn’t try it long enough to reset your circadian rhythm” or something, I’m talking years, not days. My body never got used to it, and I always felt like baking refuse.

My body simply operates better when I stay up late and sleep late. I think more clearly, perform better in my workouts, am less socially awkward, and, yes, am more productive and successful, when I allow myself to follow the time patterns my body naturally wants to take as opposed to trying to conform to someone else’s view of what a successful person does.

Let me clarify here that if you are someone who HAS found success in getting up early, then I, of course, believe you should continue doing that. Either it’s your natural inclination, or you’ve been able to make it so.

But if you, like me, perform best on a later to bed, later to rise schedule, stop letting people convince you that successful people get up early. If you keep thinking you SHOULD be getting up early because of someone’s arbitrary rule, but you don’t, then you’re already starting your day with a loss, and that, my friend, is debilitating and harmful to the rest of your day’s productivity.

One of the biggest keys to time management is scheduling your tasks for when you do them best, and your sleep is no different. Take this post as permission to make your own schedule that works for YOU, not you friend, your dad, or Warren Buffet. You DO need a regular sleep schedule (mine is 12:00-8:00am), but the times are up to you.

So, if you ever see a list of mine telling you to get up early, call the police, because this is one of those red flags you hear about people noticing in crime shows that someone is being impersonated.

Let me know if I can help you with time management!
