Why Motivation is Overrated

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

A question I both receive and see asked elsewhere is "How do I get/stay motivated ?"

I have what I think is a decent answer for this now called the baseline/bonus method, but that's not the point of this post.

I want you to understand that motivation will come and go. Some people experience much more, let's call it "variety" in this than others, but we all have ups and downs. These can be caused by life events, schedule changes, hormonal fluctations, sleep disruption, the temperature outside, disappointment with the Disney Star Wars sequels, and more.

So, while I enourage people to take advantage of those periods of high-motivation, what's REALLY important is that you have a plan that works regardless of how motivated you are.

So, don't make a plan when you're highly motivated that depends on you staying that way. Make one that you can make progress on during your lower points too, and just use the extra motivation when it shows up to do something extra or to push harder.

This is how a lot of you will get "unstuck," and stop constantly searching for motivation. Don't let it be the determining factor.
