Here's A Foolproof Way To Keep Up With Your Inboxes

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

Do you struggle to follow up with people, reply to all your messages in a timely manner, etc?

Here’s a foolproof way to fix that.

When we’re juggling multiple life priorities (which, who isn’t?), it’s so easy to miss messages or have extremely delayed replies to emails or texts that require some thought.

Yet these relationships are so vital, and we don’t want to make people feel forgotten or not cared about.

I think one of the most important things that I do every day is something called my “power hour”. It's really more like 10 minutes, but it rhymes, and I like that.

During this time, I set a timer, drink coffee, listen to fast-paced music, sit down (or pace around), and do the following:

-Scroll through all of my messages everywhere (social media apps, email, text messages, etc) and reply to any I’ve missed or add things I wish I’d mentioned when I was less focused on the conversation.

-Follow up with people whose names I keep on a spreadsheet who I want to stay in touch with. I simply reach out to a few of them I haven’t connected with in a while. Not too many, or you make your reply problem worse!

-I also use video messages to reply to people when it makes sense (when it adds a special touch and isn't creepy, and when I’m not in pajamas)

This time period that I’d probably be spending doing something far less valuable has been instrumental in both my businesses and my relationships. People want to feel remembered.

Give this a try! Get comfortable, set a 10 minute timer, scan your email, texts, voicemails, social media, and anywhere else you may have messages waiting, and reply to them during that time block. It doesn’t mean this is the only time you’ll reply to people throughout the day, but it does mean you’ll always reply on the same day or next day after someone sent you a message.

If you have people you want to touch base with regularly, put them on a simple Google Sheet or Excel doc, and spend the last minute or two of your power hour scanning it and reaching out to 1-2 people you haven’t talked with in a while.

And, really quick, if your idea of putting this plan into action is reading this and thinking “I’ll try this,” then you probably won’t. Put it on your calendar and protect the time. It’s 10 minutes.

You probably spend that scrolling social media on the toilet anyway.

If you like time-management strategies like this, I’ll be running a six-week program that teaches a complete system anyone can use to spend their time on the things that matter to them and stop letting it slowly leak away. The first one will be at a very discounted rate in exchange for honest reviews. Let me know if you’re interested!
