A Better Way to Think About Your Food

Writer: Brandon WoodruffBrandon Woodruff

We use the term “diet” in an unfortunate way. It usually sounds something like this:

“After the holidays, I need to go on a diet to burn all these excess pounds!”

“What is a good diet I can go on to lose weight?”

While the goal of getting into better health is noble, statements like these demonstrate an unhealthy way of thinking about our food. It shouldn’t be a season of our life, but a new rhythm to it that will last forever.

So, in an attempt to make this simple and memorable, I have put together this little acrostic with strange words that have nothing to do with diet.

🍩Daily: You want to focus on habits that you will, for the most part, keep up each day. Not something you can only maintain for a little while.

🍩Inside: Us fitness folk are often so concerned with what people (including ourselves) see on the outside, that we neglect proper nutrition that keeps our inside healthy. Shooting for 80% whole foods is a great idea.

🍩Enjoy: Sometimes we go the opposite direction and think that eating well means we throw out all the foods we like that aren’t super nutritious. Stop that! You should enjoy things you like sometimes for no reason other than that you enjoy them. Try and get 20% from these types of foods.

🍩Target: In all your eating, always be thinking toward where you want to be. Want to lose fat? Those incredibly high-calorie foods are probably not the best option. Want to build muscle? A low-protein diet will make that difficult.

Each of these could get its own chapter in a book, but I’m trying to keep it short and memorable.

If you would, please share this one; I think it could be helpful for people! Unless you don’t find it helpful; in which case, don’t share!
